SUSI For Student Leaders on Religious Pluralism Winter Program
The Public Affairs Section is pleased to announce the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Indonesian Student Leaders on Religious Pluralism. The program will take place in the U.S. over the course of five weeks, January 22 – February 26, 2011. The institute will be hosted by Temple University in Philadelphia. Post has been requested to submit twenty-four (24) nominations, in rank order. A total of twenty (20) students will be selected.
Applications for the Study of the United States Institute for Indonesian Student Leaders on Religious Pluralism are due Friday, July 30, 2010.
We appreciate your assistance in identifying candidates. Please submit cv, application form and a nomination justification from you or other prominent figures for each candidate nominated electronically to reniartii@state.gov . If you nominate more than one candidate, please rank order your nominees. Please see the Candidate Description and Qualifications below and in the nomination form. We encourage you to recruit candidates from non-elite backgrounds, and from both rural and urban sectors throughout the country. Candidates should have little or no prior experience in the United States. Employees of U.S. government institutions or recipients of significant U.S. government aid are not eligible.
Please note that this is a special program for Indonesian students. We want to send stellar representatives.

Specific Required Qualifications
The participants are expected to be highly motivated and exemplary undergraduate students from colleges, universities, and other institutions of higher education. While all candidates will have a strong interest in religious pluralism, their fields of study might vary, and can include disciplines such as Anthropology, Government, History, International Affairs, Law, Political Science, Religion, and Sociology.
Other Required Qualifications:
- be 25 years of age or younger
- have strong English language skills
- be committed to returning to their home universities following completion of their institute program
- demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in their university and community activities
- indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States
- have a sustained high level of academic achievement, as indicated by grades, awards, and teacher recommendations
- have demonstrated commitment to community and extracurricular university activities
- have had little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of their home country
- be mature, responsible, independent, confident, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful and inquisitive
- be willing and able to fully participate in an intensive academic program, community service, and educational travel program
- be comfortable with campus life, prepared to share living accommodations, and able to make adjustments to cultural and social practices different from those of their home country.
